Summer is time for family outdoor activity and fun. Of course, as members of the family, our pets are usually included in our recreational planning. Let's face it. It just wouldn't be the same without them.
In order to make the most of this special time of year, its important to remember that our four-legged friends require some special considerations when it comes to getting through the heat of summer as comfortably as possible.
Outdoor Activity
Now that the weather is warmer you'll probably take your pet on more walks. Just be mindful that sidewalks and streets can become very hot.
You might want to set your walks for early morning and evening, when things have cooled off so that paws stay comfortable.
The same is true for playtime. If your pet is playing during the cooler times of the day they are much less likely to become over heated.
One helpful, fun tool for keeping your pet cool can be a kiddie pool make of solid plastic. Some pets enjoy splashing and wading in water.
Water Safety
Water safety for pets is just as important as it is for people. Your pet requires supervision if he's going to be around a swimming pool.
Make sure your pet doesn't drink the pool water, as the chemicals can be dangerous.
Any boating activities that include your pet require that you keep him in a flotation device.
Lots of running and playing in the heat can quickly lead to dehydration. Make sure that there is always an accessible source of water to readily quench your pet's thirst. If you're away from home, be sure to carry plenty of water with you.
Grooming
Long, full coats can be especially troublesome and hot during the summer months. Be sure to keep your pet's coat as closely trimmed as possible. Outdoor activities means being exposed to lots of debris which can cling to long hair.
A healthy trim with a good set of dog grooming clippers will help make sure you and your pet will get the most out of outdoor fun time without the worry of post-play cleaning and grooming.
Summer is one of the best times of year. Make this a healthy, happy time for you and your pet.
